Reading comprehension - Intermediate level

You don't have to spend a lot of money for a good Halloween costume. Costumes can easily be made from store bought objects and things around the home. Here are instructions on how to make a robot. It will take an afternoon to make.

You will need:

  • a large cardboard box
  • foil
  • glue
  • scissors
  • coloured card
  • duct tape
  • silver paint
  • a dryer venting hose
  • grey clothes
  • electrical items (old wires, small LED bulbs, springs etc)

You can buy these items cheaply from an arts and craft store, and you can buy the dryer hose cheaply from a home store or online. You can either buy an aluminium hose, or paint a white one with silver paint.

Start by cutting head and arm holes out of the cardboard box. Paint the box silver and glue the electrical items on random parts of the box. You can cover parts of the box in tin foil, and stick the LED bulbs on top of it. Use duct tape on the edges of the boxes as a border. Experiment with coloured card to make control panels.

For the arms, cut the venting hose to the right length and duct tape them to the arm holes from the inside, so it doesn't show. Put on your grey clothes. This could be grey shoes, jogging trousers, and a long-sleeved t-shirt. Put on the cardboard box and your costume is complete!
