North Ayrshire Council has launched a new initiative on dog fouling. Owners of dogs who do not clean up after their pets will have their names and photographs displayed on a large screen. In Irvine Town Centre the screen is located.
The Council's Head of Streetscape, Gary McKinnon, said, "Dog fouling is an aspect of daily life that upsets a great many local residents. By naming and shaming offenders in this way we hope to encourage responsible behaviour from dog owners. I will not mess allow on our streets."
The first offender has already been displayed on the screen and named as Morag McWhirter from Kilwinning. Mrs McWhirter was not prepared to speak to the Irvine Chronicle.
A local resident who was willing to go on record commented, "I'd tar and feather them."
Not everyone agreed, however, with one Irvine resident commenting, "what the council will waste money on next?"
